Abstract

Free and Open Source Software tools (often referred to as FOSS/ FLOSS) are being used in teacher curriculum writing and multimedia pedagogy projects in teacher preparation programs and K-12 enrichment activities in a major southwestern university partly through the support of a number of agencies including the National Science Foundation and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Courses and workshops that exclusively use these forms of software have been developed, including a curriculum for preparing teachers to master the rigorous Texas Master Technology Teacher Exam. This article reports results from several FLOSS tools-based integrated science, mathematics, engineering and technology activities that have been successfully used in professional development, K-12, and college programs to increase access to technology and to frame the understanding of key technology concepts. The lessons and workshop materials are now being adapted for use beyond Texas to achieve standards-based technology expertise supported by online modules available under creative commons licensing.
