Abstract

Research suggests that two important factors that hinder postgraduate students’ ability to complete their research education are isolation and lack of resources. These issues are especially salient to students who conduct research in remote areas, overseas, or who juggle research along with full time work and family obligations. This paper outlines a model for web conferencing to create an online research community among an understudied population: higher degree by research students. This model involves engaging participants with asynchronous technology to establish trust, rapport, and reciprocity; and using synchronous web conferencing to enhance participants’ writing skills, their knowledge of theories and methods of social research, and to promote collaboration and constructive feedback about their research.
