Abstract
The World Wide Web (WWW) has considerable potential for delivering distance education programs. New software tools are being developed to facilitate the authoring, delivery and management of Web-based courses. In this paper, we perform a detailed assessment of five such Web-based educational environments, namely WebCT, TopClass, LearningSpace, Virtual-U and LearnLinc. We base our evaluation on experimentation and practice with these tools.
