Sharing Classroom Practices: A Scalable, Sustainable Model of Teacher Professional Development for Learning in the 21st Century

Abstract
Building on the success at Dunshaughlin Community College, a scalable and sustainable model of professional development for teachers was developed at the district level. The model was rooted in a Peer Coaching programme developed by the authors, building on experiences at a Peer Coaching Facilitators’ workshop sponsored by Microsoft. This accredited post graduate programme focuses on learning for the 21st century, peer coaching skills and the development of digital fluency. The programme commenced in October 2009 with a target group of teachers who are the ICT coordinators in the schools across the district. These ICT coordinators have traditionally been associated with the development of teachers’ technical ICT skills. Participation in the programme supported these teachers to develop innovative and emerging new pedagogies that support student learning and the development of 21st century skills. This paper reports on our findings from the first year of this programme.
