Abstract

This project aims to provide coding classes to 1st grade students at a public, Title I school, in a large school district in the Midwest. The entire school demographics are largely Hispanic and from low-income families. The project aims to provide equal computer science learning opportunities to both Hispanic students and students from low socio-economic families, and facilitate young students to step into the potential “STEM Pathway” in their future study and career. The two major goals of the project are for students to be able to demonstrate using at least one of the six coding skills to solve robotic problems and demonstrate increased motivation for computer coding. The teacher will follow the lesson plans provided by the Kids First Coding & Robotics kit. The coding lessons will be taught for 45 minutes every two weeks during science or social studies time. The teacher and researcher will keep track of students’ progress and assessment data till the end of their school year for analysis and evaluation. The coding and robotics kits will be purchased with grant funds.
