Abstract

This paper discusses the potential for using ipads to assist in the supervision of pre-service teachers during their practicum. The Ipad, a tablet computer with a touch screen is beginning to make an impact on education (Ireland & Woollerton, 2010). Although Apple applications such as the Apple iMovie software have been identified as a convenient and valuable means of recording and editing videos of teachers (Calandra, Brantley-Dias, & Dias, 2006), the Ipad is only starting to be introduced as a means of recording for teacher reflection. It is well supported throughout the literature that recording and video analysis improves the ability to reflect. Cunningham and Benedetto (2002) suggested that small, more discreet recorders are better for classroom teaching, Wifi connections and easier ability to store and transfer files were also identified as helpful to the process (Cunningham & Benedetto, 2002). This pilot project explores the potential for enhancing reflective skills in pre-service teachers who use the iPad for recording and observing teaching in their practicum settings.
