Abstract
Free and Open Source Software (often referred to as FOSS/ FLOSS) is transforming opportunities for access to technology in education. FLOSS/FOSS provides low-cost, high quality opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to develop multimedia, collaborate online, manage content, and support innovative pedagogical strategies. This article reports on ways various FLOSS/FOSS tools, especially "portable" ones, are being used in teacher curriculum writing and multimedia pedagogy projects in a teacher preparation program. It summarizes some of the social, political, and economical frames of free and open source software in education.
