Abstract

Visual representation of information is a very important part of communicating ideas, yet educators do not always utilize this cognitive tool as a part of the teaching and learning process. As instruction is moving more and more from a physical location to a cyberspace environment, the question of effective use of visual thinking tools and strategies to facilitate online learning needs to be explored. This paper reviews relevant research, theories, and strategies for making thinking visible and examines the use of visual thinking tools for online learning by five faculty members in a higher education context. The uses of technology, both as a tool and as an outlet, for making thinking visible in online learning environments are further analyzed and discussed.
