Abstract

This study examines the purpose and use of style guides in the development of corporate online documentation and computer-based training (CBT) systems. The study was also used to determine if organizations currently developing online documentation and CBT projects research, develop, and use style guides specific to the needs of their organization, and what implications the use of a style guide has had on their projects. Ten developers of online documentation and CBT projects participated in this study. Comparisons of the results of their input on a standard questionnaire showed that the development and use of a style guide assists in the overall development of an online documentation project or CBT system, and that the failure to use a formalized style guide resulted in additional time spent in redefining screen elements.
