Abstract

The current study examines the development of a Community of Inquiry (CoI) within a social-virtual curriculum delivered through an online platform. Specifically, it investigates the social, cognitive, teaching and learner presence within a CoI in a non-formal educational setting, where teenagers use blogs for educational and social purposes. Given the non-formal educational setting, and the use of blogs by teenagers the study, aims to identify how the model is adjusted. MYTecC, the Mediterranean Youth Technology Club, an educational-research project consists the context of the study. A case study approach was employed making use of qualitative data. The CoI survey instrument provided the basis for the rubrics development. Blogs’ observation and online interviews with the students and the instructors are used as the methods of data collection. The results showed that a COI can be developed within a non-formal educational setting, suggesting changes and additions to the teacher and learner presence.
