Abstract

This paper examines a learning context where a wiki was developed for the study and interpretation of English literature. Since poetry generates multiple interpretations, it was considered appropriate as a learning object for collaborative, inquiry-based activity. The wiki was designed to facilitate online access to selected poems by William Blake and encouraged the participants to react to the texts and to others’ interpretations asynchronously. The wiki’s affordances for juxtaposing the poetic text and the readers’ responses to it were analyzed in terms of the interface between the specific content, the pedagogical task, and the learning process. The presentation highlights the potential contribution of wiki environments to the learning process while revealing some of their limitations. It also points to the challenges that wiki-based pedagogy poses to the educator.
