Abstract

Abstract: Building on research in asynchronous discussion boards, the results of a study involving two universities' graduate online classes will be disseminated during this presentation. Discourse analysis techniques were modified to analyze discussion boards and will be identified and described during this presentation. Handouts will illustrate ways in which communication can be strengthened in online classes via a Connected Stance. The conclusions of this study add to the body of research concerning discourse analysis, as we offer a new way to look at online student responses. It also informs computer-mediated communication research by proposing a 3R (Respond, React, and Reply) discussion board technique that encourages substantive postings.
