Abstract

In this online Ed.D. program, advising is more than, “What class comes next?” The Graduate Advising Space (GAS) offers academic support, a means of socializing as an Ed.D. student, and offers each cohort member a community with peers and faculty. The GAS is based on the core values from the NCADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising, as well as theory related to community in online learning (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2010), and socialization (Bragg, 1976) so that students are prepared for their role as a doctoral student in the areas of research, writing, and online learning strategies. In addition, the use of interactive technology within the GAS supports a personal connection between faculty and students throughout virtual meetings regarding orientation, advising, comprehensive examination, and the dissertation process.
