Abstract

Online learning has transformed the educational experience for both students and instructors. Online learning is the use of the internet to access learning materials, share and interact with content, instructors and other learners with the hopes of constructing new meaning and learning from the process (Ally, 2005). This article aims to identify the impact that building communities in an online learning environment can have on students and presents a systemic view of online learning. The authors identify communication, cooperation and collaboration as important components for successful online learning communities.
