Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) is a fundamental skill for all students and in the recent years there is a growing interest in improving students’ problem solving skills via CT. However, when traditional education institutions are slow in adopting the changes, many community-based learning events such as coding boot camps, hackathons, and hour of code events pick up significantly across the country. Community-based learning is proven to provide essential gateways in connecting learners with the types of knowledge and skills that are not studied fully in traditional settings. In teacher preparation programs, community-based learning has positive results in changing prospective teachers’ misperceptions and attitudes in the area of training (Cooper, 2007). This paper starts with the review of community-based learning activities in computational thinking and continues with a discussion and synthesis of curriculum design, development and assessment practices in the community-based programs.
