Abstract

Our analytics indicate the University's LMS discussion forums are quiet, seldom used; in fact, many staff now do not even switch them on. This in comparison to five years ago when these forums were overwhelmed with content and questions is an amazing development. Anecdotally we have detected a socially driven undercurrent that has drawn participation in these forums away to a more comforting / familiar social media platform. This panel will discuss evidence both anecdotal and experiential looking at the way social media has replaced the discussion forum as a means by which students support each other in their studies.
