Building IT Community on Campus
ARTICLE

EDUCAUSE Review Volume 41, Number 1, ISSN 1527-6619

Abstract

The author of this article describes the central IT structure of her institution, the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Based on her experiences, she observes that building and maintaining a community of support that spans the central IT organization and the distributed IT support providers presents real challenges. As such, she believes that campus IT leaders must listen to the IT staff outside of the central organization as well as to those inside the central organization and must be sure that the experience and knowledge of the entire community is used to improve the IT infrastructure and services. In this article, the author describes the three different, but complementary approaches that UW-Madison has taken in building its own campus-wide IT community. These approaches include: (1) Encouraging more involvement by distributed support providers in setting IT policy and direction; (2) Encouraging more involvement by distributed support providers in technical decision-making; and (3) Developing a three-tiered network management model.
