Abstract
This paper discusses the design and evaluation of an online social network used within twenty-two established after school programs across three major urban areas in the Northeastern United States. The purpose of this after school program is to empower students in grades K-8 to work within their communities to prevent obesity through healthy eating and exercise. The online social network is designed to support communication among the participants in this after school program. Results indicate that the online social network has potential for advancing the program’s goals; however, greater attention is needed in emphasizing the network’s purpose to participating educators, and the design should better support critical thinking, social presence, and play.
