Abstract

The examination of a corpus consisting of English abstracts written exclusively by Japanese researchers reveals a substantial number of English expressions such as ‘high possibility’ that sound unnatural to native speakers of English. The inability to choose a preferred linguistic sequence from a number of grammatically acceptable alternatives can be detrimental in writing academic papers. To compensate for this lack of native-like selection, we have compiled a corpus consisting of over sixty million running English words collected from English academic research journals and have developed a system through which learners can obtain useful information on concordances and collocations relating to any particular English word in the life sciences. It is hoped that this system will help Japanese researchers develop greater confidence in their choice of English collocations, thereby making their papers more readable and free from erroneous or unnatural expressions.
