How Student Constructed Digital Movies of Their Teaching Can Be Used to Demonstrate Their Attainment of the Standards of Effective Practice in Electronic Portfolios

Abstract
The increase use of digital video recording of classroom teachers offers a great opportunity to extend our ability to more accurately assess the meeting of standards of effective practice. Analysis of the standards of effective practice for initial teacher licensure in the State of Minnesota reveals a heavy reliance upon demonstration of effective teaching in the classroom. The switch to having students document their standards of mastery through the construction of movies that contain both classroom video clips and targeted reflections allows for a more accurate assessment of preservice teacher candidates. Furthermore, student construction of these movies has students looking more closely at how their teaching is impacting student learning.
