Abstract

The advent of social media has spawned a surge of open-source, user-created intelligence available through online media such as blogs and social networks. Since the number of people participating in social media activities seems to increase on a daily basis, we anticipate the amount of collective wisdom or open-source intelligence to grow as well. Our proposed presentation will outline our reflections on and work towards further enhancing social media by adding in instructional design principles in an effort to further facilitate learning. It will specifically address the Tools & Content-oriented Applications theme as we will discuss the current and potential uses of social media in a variety of formal and informal learning contexts. We will also address ways of applying “traditional” best practices for multimedia and hypermedia applications in instructionally-enhanced social media applications.
