Abstract

Changes in legislation as well as moral and ethical issues make it important for academics to provide inclusive teaching and learning to students with disabilities. Nevertheless, academics may not always be aware of the requirements of disabled students, may not consider making learning materials accessible to be part of their remit, and cannot always appreciate the difficulties experienced by students with disabilities. This paper discusses the results of a large-scale evaluation that explored the potential of accessibility simulations as a means to support inclusive practices in e-learning. It explores their effectiveness in awareness raising and examines whether they can be used to enhance appreciation and understanding of disabled students’ problems of access to learning materials, and furthermore, encourage the utilisation of inclusive teaching techniques.
