Abstract

Because of the diversity of learners in the universal access stage of higher education in Japan and the increasing demand for computer literacy education to cope with the progress of information technology, the effective teaching methods are needed in computer literacy education in colleges. The authors pay attention to collaborative learning as a method to achieve more effective learning in computer literacy courses. This paper discusses problem in teaching computer literacy in colleges in the universal access stage, and examines some facilitation techniques for collaborative learning in computer literacy courses, namely introduction of inter-group competition, the selection of appropriate group assignment methods, and design of assignment tasks. The effectiveness of such techniques in collaborative learning is discussed based on the results of their use for four years in two courses.
