Abstract

Presently, in order to promote on-campus computerization, the introduction of the university information portal has been advanced in higher education institutes. There are many university information portals. However, the university information portal is in a transition period as a learning/research support system, leaving its definition still ambiguous. In this paper we propose a model for the university information portal. We clarify the difference between enterprise and university information portals then organize the functions of the university information portal. The university information portal is not a single WEB based system. The university information portal is a system that integrates the distributed database and the WEB based system, and is also a framework that becomes the information foundation. In this paper, the information portal of Tokushima University is taken as a case example and the problems of its development and operation are examined.
