Abstract

The use of the Internet for instruction in academic institutions has grown in the last years. This raises questions on the process and the potential of Internet implementation in teaching. This study copes with questions in the macro-level, focusing on Internet diffusion at Tel-Aviv University. The goals are: 1. Characterizing the diffusion process of web-supported instruction; and 2. Characterizing the factors affecting the diffusion of Internet usage, and examining their connection to faculty's usage patterns. The study focuses on the period 2000-2003. The model chosen for the assessment of the diffusion process is based on Roger's (1995) model. In order to assess the usage patterns both quantitative and qualitative methods were implemented, including interviews and questionnaires (n=287) of faculty members. Preliminary findings suggest a high rate of growth of usage by faculty and, as a result, by students, with a significant effect on the number of web-supported courses.
