Abstract

This proposal introduces the Student-centered Mobile Interactive Learning Environment (SMILE), using mobile devices and network technology to engage students in learning activities including generating their questions based upon what they have learned, sharing questions with peers, and evaluating each other’s questions. Depending on the coverage of network connection, SMILE has local and global version; local version relies on a local area network while global version works via Wi-Fi/3G Internet. Pilot studies were conducted with the local version in an elementary classroom setting and an undergraduate-level course. Results support that SMILE has a positive impact on students learning experience. The global version is being developed in accordance with feedback gathered from the pilot studies, particularly to increase location and time flexibility for students to access SMILE. Furthermore, learners sharing similar interests around the world can interact with each other via SMILE global version so as to form a global learning community.
