Problem-Based Instruction and Web 2.0, Meeting the Needs of the 21st Century Learner

Abstract
Given the challenge of blending a collaborative web environment with effective learning strategies within the school environment, today’s teachers and pre-service teachers are faced with updating their portfolio of teaching tools. The natural fit for developing creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration skills, fluency in researching and searching for information, critical thinking, problem solving, and comfort within a computer environment (International Society for Technology in Education, 2007) (Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 2007) is teaching with problem-based instruction (PBL). The following describes an initial study of pre-service teachers who engaged in a PBL Capstone course prior to student teaching. Early indicators suggest the potential of PBL in preparing pre-service teacher to teach for 21st Century Skills.
