Presentation of feedback in interactive learning environments: Some dimensions

Interactive learning environments (ILEs) can display information and enable learners to interact with this information. Feedback is an important component in leaner-information interaction and is critical in knowledge acquisition. It can potentially be used to support different pedagogical strategies and to help develop different cognitive skills. However, designers of ILEs still lack proper frameworks to help them analyze and employ varied and appropriate feedback strategies consciously. This paper tries to address this need by bringing together research from several related disciplines to provide such a framework. The framework discussed in this paper describes the presentation of feedback along three related dimensions: when (timing), what (content), and how (delivery). Each dimension along with its landscape of possibilities is discussed. It is hoped that aided by this framework, designers can discuss and select appropriate ways for providing feedback according to their pedagogical goals.
