Abstract

Realizing augmented reality learning scenarios with smartglasses creates a wearable educational technology providing learners with active access to various kinds of additional information while keeping their hands free. Various approaches introduced those possibilities to the educational research community, but the description and categorization of those approaches remain crucial. We introduce a descriptive model based on a multidirectional communication between learner, AR system and content in the context of science laboratory experiences. Based on a framework from cognitive science, common multimedia design principles are integrated as well as domain-specific representational aspects meeting at this special educational scenario. Three different scenarios using smartglasses as AR system are being categorized to elaborate the descriptive and comparative function of the presented model. By bridging cognitive science and physics education research, we focus on key points for designing AR based learning environments.
