Abstract
In this paper, we illustrate a cognitive-based model of instructional design with particular reference to educational animations. The practically-orientated model is an adaptation of Cognitive Load Theory to a real-world design scenario whereby an educational multimedia designer is collaborating with a content expert. The determinants and dynamics of cognitive load are demonstrated in an intuitive and relevant manner with the intent of providing the designer with a functional and understandable overview of cognitive design principles and their applicability.
