Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of teachers educating students in a bring your own device (BYOD) middle school setting, by which students’ have access to and use always-on and connected personal technology in class. The participants included five teachers of students from grades five to eight and two facility administrators from the school. Using a transcendental phenomenological approach, data was obtained through semi-structured interviews, pre- and post- teacher survey, along with classroom and lab observations and related documents. The findings revealed the manner in which technology was being embraced by teachers and administrators as their lived experiences of educating students in a connected setting, including: being a digital evangelist in and outside the classroom; implementing new technologies through peer-to-peer collaboration; modeling digital-age learning to support student success; as well as actively managing student use of always-on and connected technology.
