Collaborative AR application design for early childhood education

Engaged learning produces better learning experience and knowledge retention. Adventure learning and phenomena-based learning are useful pedagogical approaches to achieve this. This paper takes a reflective approach, explaining the process followed of combining phenomena-based learning with adventure learning to develop an AR gamified application for preschool and first grade children in Finland. The design process followed a unique collaborative design including the end user in every phase of development. Most of the ideas from the children were implemented. A minimum viable product was developed and tested with the end users to inform further development. User results showed a lot of excitement and elements of surprise which supported continued engagement. The competition element as requested by the children has proven to be a beneficial motivator. This paper also reports take home lessons on the development process as the final development and implementation is still underway.
