Cognitive Development Through Narrative:Computer Interface Design for Educational Purposes

This paper examines the literature on narrative psychology which advances the notion of meaning making through the individual's internalization of cultural meaning by way of stories. Further, the development of narrative perspectives in clinical practice and in applications in the classroom are also reviewed. Because computers allow users to quickly and eas-ily manipulate and build personal stories, they potentially of-fer learners a powerful tool through the intensified applica-tion of narrative cognitive experiences. Specific application of the narrative psychology theory in computer interface de-sign for educational purposes is analyzed. In addition, contri-butions of film theory to interface design as it relates to narra-tive constructs are explored. Finally, specific issues related to the implementation of narrative approaches to learning in com-puter environments are analyzed and new strategies proposed.
