Abstract

In September of 1998, the first four courses were offered by the Virtual High School of
Newfoundland and Labrador. The school was conceived and designed to meet the needs of
approximately 80,000 students in this remote Canadian province who live and attend school in
small, rural communities whose survival is threatened unless the schools remain competitive with
urban schools. This presentation describes the early stages of building the Virtual High School and
early assessments by teachers and learners.
