Teaching and learning in an interactive synchronous online learning environment demands rigorous preparation of online teachers in the complexities of collaborative online tools, web-conferencing and virtual learning platforms. It also involves identifying the knowledge, skills and practices that are required to become effective online instructors. The purpose of this presentation is to document the process of online instruction as experienced by two math and two science teacher educators teaching synchronously through a live web-conferencing portal over the course of three semesters in a graduate program. Teaching dynamic subjects like math and science online in real-time, involving the use of manipulatives and hands-on experiments, necessitates effective decisions on part of the course instructor with the content, delivery and assessment of the learning experiences. This presentation will discuss strategic decisions and challenges involved in the design and delivery of course content in a synchronous online environment.
