Abstract

The asynchronous online discussion forum is one of the oldest online communication environments. The discussion forum is often the cornerstone of many Internet courses; therefore, a positive, quality forum must be developed for optimal participation. This paper presents proven ideas for planning and implementing positive asynchronous online discussion forums. If an instructor will follow the recommendations for online discussion forum design, monitor all aspects of the online discussions on a continual basis, and initiate improvements when needed, the asynchronous online discussion forum can and will be a cyber-forum of student-centered learning.
