The purpose of this paper is to report the results of an innovative approach to teaching and learning mathematics in middle grades. INCOME – Integrating Computing and Mathematics Education–a funded project by Department of Education– is a collaborative effort between a School of Education, Computer Science department, the Science and Mathematics Education Center and a high-need, partnership school district in a southeastern state. The project is designed to assist middle grade mathematics teachers to integrate computing and mathematics using Squeak Etoys simulation and modeling tool. The project also assists teachers to develop and implement a computational elective course as an instructional intervention for low-performing middle grade students in mathematics to help students’ simultaneous development of conceptual understanding and computational fluency and spark their interest in STEM area.
