Abstract

This article presents findings from a pilot study that followed the online social behaviors of 22 first-year graduate students. Using social identity, common ground, communication privacy management, and social information processing theories as a framework, this study examines how students engage in online learning communities using social network systems (SNSs), present themselves to course facilitators and peers, and balance privacy concerns with their desire to communicate and interface with facilitators and peers.
