Beyond Immersion – Meaningful Involvement in Virtual Worlds

Immersive experiences are argued to be one of the main advantages for using virtual worlds for educational simulation, however further research is required to understand how learners become immersed and how to encourage this immersion. Meaningful involvement in a simulation is argued to be one factor determining immersion. In this study, nine users’ experiences of immersion within a virtual world role play simulation are described through categorisation of six modalities of involvement. The results demonstrate that user involvement is an important factor in determining immersion, and that users may become involved through any of the six modalities.
