Abstract

This paper describes an alternative assessment technique that incorporates peer assessment and is designed to increase student-student and student-instructor interaction in online and hybrid courses. Online and hybrid courses lend themselves well to alternative assessment techniques that are both authentic in nature and that can be used in formative and summative contexts. Such alternative assessment techniques encourage higher-level thinking that involves active use of knowledge in authentic contexts. Furthermore, the technique described in this paper enhances the development of a vibrant learning community as a result of meaningful interactions among students and between students and the instructor.
