Abstract

This paper explores some of the issues related to increased social networking and participation in online communities of practice for academic purposes. These issues have been explored using the framework of a hypothetical scenario to demonstrate the various possible outcomes of active and inactive participation in online communities of practice. The objective of this paper is to examine these issues in order to emphasize the need for more relevant research in this area, especially considering time constraints and the rate of participation (creation and maintenance).
