Blended learning –flexible practicum in Primary School Teacher Education

According to a wide array of research, the process of becoming a teacher seems to be greatly influenced by practicum. Students and teachers commonly regard it as the cornerstone of teacher education. This article describes a modern way to organize a practicum where pre-service teachers work in a blended learning environment and are mentored by a local colleague and by a university teacher. The Own Class practicum is an alternative teacher training practicum, which was originally created by a teacher trainee. In this practicum pre-service teachers will work in an authentic classroom situations working there as a substitute teacher, carrying the responsibility of teaching, as long as a half year period. In adult teacher training studies, blended learning will make the final practicum flexible and suitable for adult students. The students are skilled enough to use ITC versatile ways, which has made it also possible to organize one of the practicum to carry out in schools all around Finland.
