Abstract

The field of accounting is typical of many disciplines with regards to requisite basic skills and accounting educators are often keen advocates of repetitive and mind-numbingly boring assignments prescribed with the goal of embedding said necessary expertise. This research describes the enhancement of an accounting assignment designed to embed basic cost behaviour concepts and cost volume profit techniques. The first technique to improve engagement was personalisation of the interactive feedback provided by the assignment to half of the students. Students receiving personalised feedback are addressed by their preferred name with the interactive feedback provided to them. The second mechanism used to increase interest with the assessment item was the provision of alternate tones of feedback provided by the assignment. The third method used was the awarding of textbook prizes to three students for their achievements in completion of the assignment. The effect of each of the three mechanisms is analysed and discussed in this research.
