Abstract

This paper introduces an approach to ensure individual accountability in the context of an online collaborative problem-based learning process. The paper describes the nature of the course in which the approach was implemented so the audience can establish the relevance to their own teaching. Then it describes the details of the approach including ways to assess individual accountability and considerations when implementing it. The paper ends establishing a research agenda for refining the approach so that online instructors can facilitate meaningful online collaborative PBL experiences that take full advantage of the benefits of this methodology while addressing the most common issues students share when thinking about collaboration and the additional complications they perceive when this happens through the online milieu.
