Abstract

This paper proposes an evaluation plan to explore the prospect of a new learning application which implements augmented reality (AR) technology for teaching and learning astronomy based on the Malaysian secondary school science subject syllabus. AR, in which 3-D virtual objects are integrated into a 3-D real environment in real time, is hoped to help counter the declining interest on science subjects in Malaysian public schools. AR is believed to be able to help reduce the language barrier, thus ease the current transition in the medium of instruction from the national language (Bahasa Malaysia) to English as required by the Educational Ministry of Malaysia; and from which the decline is attributed to. The development and the design of the AR application will be based on the existing commercial AR software, ARToolKit. Evaluation of the developed application is then to be done at the selected Malaysian Smart School using a comparison method.
