What’s Technology Got to Do With It?: Exploring Reflection and Technology in an English Education Methods Course

Reflection and reflective practice are common elements in teacher education, with teacher educators working to create teachers who are able to analyze issues of teaching and learning from differing perspectives and make changes to both practice and belief as a result (Calderhead, 1992; Loughran, 1996; Zeichner & Liston, 1996). Teacher educators also seek to create technologically proficient teachers who can use various forms of technology to support their classroom practice and their students' learning (Bell, 2001; Swenson, Rozema, Young, McGrail & Whitin, 2005). In support of these objectives, a teacher educator created a reflective journal assignment incorporating technology for her secondary English methods course. This presentation will consider the focal question: What does technology have to do with secondary English pre-service teacher reflection? Using data collected in the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years, this presentation will consider the place of technology in reflection and the implications for both pre-service teachers and teacher educators.
