Abstract

Building on previous work on teaching science concepts online, this paper will describe a recent exploratory project to develop and apply a Vygotsky-based learning model to mathematics learning in a distance education course. The paper will describe the current version of the learning model as it was expanded from a science-based to a wider STEM-based learning model. The paper will then present and discuss preliminary results of the recent use of the model in an online graduate course for math teachers and mathematics education students. Implications for expanding the model to other STEM areas will also be discussed.
