Abstract

This study was aimed at evaluating the reliability and validity of an effective reading speed test for second language learners within the framework of the classical test theory (Brown 1996). The participants in this study were 107 Japanese EFL (English as a foreign language) learners, ranging in the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) reading part scores from 105 to 470 points. Their reading speed and the comprehension rate were recorded, and their effective reading speed was calculated for the analysis. The experiment indicated the reliability and validity of effective reading speed tests as a second language reading proficiency test.
