Abstract

E-Learning systems have traditionally focussed on supplying the learner with a static structured approach to learning content on particular subject matter. Intelligent Tutoring Systems brought some hope to making e-learning more flexible by providing "intelligent' tutoring or annotated menus for course navigation. Other recent research in the area of adaptive courseware in e-learning systems has focussed more on adapting content or sequencing of content based on the single learning style for a learner. We believe this is an incomplete area of e-learning technology in adaptive terms and further to this we believe adaption of courseware based on learning styles is a complex multi-faceted problem, whereby a learner's style(s) may not be fixed in all situations but are a complex dynamic attribute of the learner. We introduce an approach to adapting courseware content in a SCORM based e-learning system to align course objectives with a particular learner's style(s), ability and circumstances based on sound knowledge of teaching methods.
