Abstract

Despite the growing literature on theory and practice of computer mediated communication in the classroom, the failure or sucess of a given experience involving the use of technology is sometimes difficult to predict. In this paper we describe the ups and downs of a project that linked together two groups of students, one from Spain and another one from the United States through a series of academic tasks. Careful matching of the two groups in terms of size, age, interests, the design of engaging motivating activities and their scheduling and, the leading role of the two teachers responsible for the experience are some of the factors that should not be underestimated if we seek the sustainability of the experience. Nevertheless, other issues, such as the perception of unequal goals or benefits from the experience may discourage the leading teachers and make them abandon the project.
